Dutch John

Dutch John has a small number of lodges and cabins, several oriented specifically toward anglers fishing the Green River below the dam. Inventory is limited, so this is not the town to arrive without a reservation during peak fly-fishing season.

Dutch John sits at 6,454 feet, about a mile from Flaming Gorge Dam — the closest town to the dam itself and to Cedar Springs Marina on the reservoir's southern end. Its population is small and genuinely seasonal, swinging from around 150 residents in winter up to roughly 250 in summer as anglers and dam-area workers move through.

Unlike Manila, which predates the reservoir by decades, Dutch John exists because of it. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation platted and built the town starting in 1957 specifically to house the workers constructing Flaming Gorge Dam, completed in 1964. After construction wrapped, Dutch John transitioned into a smaller community of dam maintenance staff, along with National Park Service and Forest Service personnel — a classic company-town-turned-recreation-hub story.

Today Dutch John's identity is tied closely to the Green River fly-fishing corridor below the dam and the Little Hole National Recreation Trail, both a short drive or walk from town. It's a quieter, more utilitarian base than Manila, built around access rather than amenities.

Dining options in Dutch John are minimal and geared toward visitors passing through on their way to the river or the dam — expect a small general store and a lodge restaurant or two rather than a dining scene. Most visitors planning a full evening out head to Manila or Vernal instead.

Flaming Gorge has no shuttle system. From Dutch John, Flaming Gorge Dam and Cedar Springs Marina are about a mile away, the Red Canyon Visitor Center is a few minutes further, and the Little Hole National Recreation Trail trailhead sits just below the dam. All of it is reached by personal vehicle or on foot within town.
